Why I decided to become an Ophthalmologist.

I am from middle class family. My father is a Chest physician. I grew up observing him, how compassionate he is with his patients. He used to treat so many Tuberculosis patients which was difficult to treat at that time. I experienced the respect and love he got from his patients. Looking for that kind of adulation for myself, slowly I decided to become a doctor. I was fascinated by the very idea of treating people with empathy without looking at their age, gender, caste or religion.

When I told my father about it, obviously he was very delighted. When I was going for my Post graduation counselling, my father told me to select Ob & Gy, as you settle down very fast and can earn more money. I just nodded my head and went Inside. Without any hesitation, I asked for Ophthalmology branch. When I came outside and told him, I saw disappointment in his eyes, but eventually he was happy for me. And I am sure today he is very proud of me.

In my 3rd year M.B.B.S., during my Ophthalmology term I saw small eyeball and Doctor operating under microscope, I just fell in love with Ophthalmology. From then it became dream for me and finally became passion for me.

I want to give enough chair time to my patients, I want to give them my ears, want to understand how they tackle pain, difficulties in life. I want to do best possible for them. When I satisfy my patients, it gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction. But occasionally I may not able to satisfy them and that equally pains me. Then I think, almighty has not given a hand to satisfy or treat that patient. That’s how we humans are created with flaws.

My work is my stress buster. A smile and happiness on my patient’s face, give me abundance satisfaction. I pray to God to continue giving me strength to serve people which I enjoy most.
