Paediatric Refractive Errors
Understanding and
Managing Vision Issues
At Little Eyes, we focus on ensuring children receive the best care for refractive errors, enabling them to see the world clearly and thrive.
About Paediatric Refractive Errors
In normal vision, light enters the eye and focuses precisely on the retina, a light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. The retina processes the light into signals that the brain interprets as images.
In children with refractive errors, light does not focus correctly on the retina, leading to blurred vision. Glasses or contact lenses correct this by bending the light properly, restoring clear vision. Spectacles are the most common and effective way to address refractive errors.

Causes of Refractive Errors
Refractive errors occur due to:
- Abnormal size of the eyeball (too long or too short).
- Changes in the curvature of the cornea.
- Variations in the lens structure.
Symptoms
Symptoms to Watch For
Children with refractive errors may:
- Struggle to read the blackboard from a distance.
- Squint to see faraway objects clearly.
- Hold books very close to their face when reading.
- Complain of frequent headaches or eye pain.
- Rub their eyes often, sometimes causing swollen eyelids.
- Experience eye strain, especially with prolonged reading (common in myopia).
- Develop a squint (in some cases of hyperopia).
- May develop frequent styes or swelling of the eyelid.
If your child shows these symptoms, consult an eye doctor immediately.
Treatment
Treatment Options
Spectacles: The primary and most effective treatment for refractive errors.
- As children grow, their eye shape and power may change, requiring periodic adjustments to their glasses.
- Regular eye checkups are crucial:
- For children under 5: Every 6 months.
- For older children: Once a year.
Contact Lenses:
- Suitable for children over 15 years old.
- Requires careful handling and hygiene practices.
LASIK Surgery:
- Recommended for children over 18 with stable eye power.

Risk Factors and Additional Notes
- Severe myopia may increase the risk of retinal detachment later in life due to the elongation of the eye.
- Spectacles neither weaken nor strengthen the eyes; they simply correct vision.
Our Commitment
At Little Eyes, we believe that wearing glasses doesn’t make a child “different”. Instead, it opens their world to clearer, brighter possibilities.
