Dr. Swapna Shanbhag is a highly skilled cornea, cataract, and refractive surgeon. She is also known for her expertise in treating patients with ocular surface disorders and dry eye. She has a keen interest in treating patients with complex cataracts, corneal disorders, and patients who need laser vision correction to enhance their vision.
Dr. Swapna Shanbhag completed her under-graduate medical training at Grant Medical College and Sir JJ Hospital, Mumbai after which she completed her residency training in Ophthalmology at M&J Institute of Ophthalmology (Regional Institute of Ophthalmology) at BJ Medical College and Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad. Dr Shanbhag then completed a two-year long-term clinical fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment at LVPEI, Hyderabad. She then did a two-year clinical research fellowship in complex corneal and ocular surface disorders at Mass Eye and Ear affiliated to Harvard Medical School, Boston. She then worked at the LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad from 2018-2025.
Dr. Swapna Shanbhag has a keen interest in research and has received various travel grants to present her research at conferences. She has published more than 100 scientific papers in national and international peer-reviewed indexed journals. She serves on the editorial board of the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology and BMC Ophthalmology and is a reviewer for journals such as the American Journal of Ophthalmology, the British Journal of Ophthalmology, and Cornea. She is a member of the Cornea Society of India and the All India Ophthalmological society. Dr Shanbhag has received various awards for her presentations and her research. She has been featured in the Top 2% World Scientists rankings in Ophthalmology for the years 2024 and 2025.
She is a leading expert in the country for treating patients who suffer from ocular surface disorders such as ocular chemical burns, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid. Dr Shanbhag’s expertise lies in treating these complex cases with surgical ocular surface reconstruction such as limbal stem cell transplantation and artificial cornea transplantation (keratoprosthesis).
